History of the main Fashion weeks in the world
While week-long fashion events are held in cities all over the world, the “Big Four” are held in New York, London, Milan, and Paris twice a year. New York was the first to host an officially-declared fashion week in 1943. With World War II raging in Europe, American designers of the time were unable to travel to France for inspiration, and the organizers of the event wanted to showcase distinctly American designs. Individual fashion shows were nothing new, but this centralizing event drew crowds like never before.
Not to be outdone, France’s haute couture designers revised their standards in 1945 to include the provision that each couture house must present to the press a line of at least 35 designs each season. It would take another two years after the end of the war for Christian Dior to fully revive the French fashion scene, and such glamor was welcome after the somberness of war time. Today, Paris’s haute couture shows – which, by law, can only take place in France – happen every January and July.
Milan fashion week was established in 1958 and is staged in scenic locations all over the city. The events showcasing 2017 spring and summer fashion featured bright, 1980s-inspired makeup, sporty leggings, “flatform” shoes that combine ballet flats and platforms, and bohemian trends.
London’s fashion week is the most recently founded, but it is held with no less attention to spectacle. In 2010, England’s capital hosted 68 fashion shows over six days, with worldwide media coverage that was said to exceed coverage for major news and sporting events. London has a great deal of motivation to keep fashion week running strong – it is worth approximately 30 million pounds to the local economy each year! Clearly, fashion photography is necessary to keep this industry booming in the years to come, and PhotoAgency One will help you secure your place in that industry.
