Subjects in luxery photography: products, locations, places
Luxury photography generally involves one of three subjects: products, locations, and places—the distinction between the latter two being specificity. Locations are a specific, like a house, yacht, or hotel. Places are broader and may simply include a landscape or cityscape shot of a luxury tourist site like the Bahamas. From New York apartments to fine, Italian products, luxury photography requires a higher degree of skill than its two arguably preceding niches: advertising and artistic photography. A capable luxury photographer must first understand the principles of advertising photography to ensure that the subject captured is presented in as appealing sense as possible while also supplementing—and even breaking—those rules and conventions with an original idea and grasp of composition to present the luxurious subjects in novel ways that catches the discerning eye of more affluent and refined sensibilities.
The professionals at Photo Agency One are trained not only in the fundamentals of advertising photography but are also selected with an eye to the tastefully unique. Our photographers understand the fine balance that must be struck between the two, often antithetical principles, of advertising and artistic photography at play in luxury shots. With such a small and exacting market, you cannot afford to trust your luxury shots with any but the best. Ensure that you do.
Style, glamor and exclusivity in luxury photography
At its essence, Luxury photography is generally a specialized version of advertising photography, though the principles of both only moderately overlap. For instance, within luxury photography it is often far more acceptable to utilize uncommon techniques. This can range from angles, depths of field, and most other compositional qualities. In this regard, luxury photographer has the leeway to verge into the realm of artistic photography. In fact, that is often part of the intent. This occurs largely because the intended audience of luxury photography is appreciably smaller than most advertising shots. With most other advertisement photographs, the intended audience is as broad as possible so that as many people as possible purchase the product.
Luxery photography as a part of advertising photography
As such, many of the conventions of advertising photography seek to set a standard that engenders a feeling of comfort and familiarity. With luxury photography on the other hand, the intended audience is definitively smaller since most people cannot afford to purchase the goods advertised. Moreover, the audience is question is more likely to be highly educated and appreciate uncustomary design choices. This is further heightened by the fact that the audience who purchases luxury goods if often consciously buying more than a product. They are buying an ideal. This allows the photographer a much broader palette of techniques to allow her work to stand out from the crowd. In terms of technique, Luxury shots will utilize the same rigor as advertising with a few additional notes. The primary concern will be, as is customary in most styles and niches, the lighting. However, the primary concern of lighting with respect to luxury photography—as well as all composition settings—will be to bring out the detail. In terms of the composition itself, you will want to utilize simple backgrounds, if possible, to highlight the luxury shot. Also, consider adding props used in groups and patterns to further highlight or frame the luxury subject.
