Kids photography requires patience and empathy
It might be a cliché to say that children grow up fast, but it’s also true. The milestones of childhood – first steps, birthdays, graduations from each grade level – seem to fly by, and it’s important to capture these precious memories while they last. Smartphones and digital cameras can do the job reasonably well, but a professional photographer can best capture the event while letting you enjoy the celebration as it’s happening. Photo Agency One can connect you with the best photographers in your area to preserve all the joy of a birthday party, a school dance, a kindergarten graduation, or any other event in your family’s life. Their management can guide you through the entire process of hiring and working with a photographer, saving you money and allowing you to focus on what’s important – your family. With locations in London, Berlin, Paris, Los Angeles, and New York, Photo Agency One will use their extensive resources to ensure that you receive the best possible photographs to treasure.
Choose the correct setting for Kids photography
No matter what the occasion, there are some techniques that will serve you well at any children’s event. If the event takes place indoors, use an ISO setting of 400-800. Additionally, be sure to bring a variety of lenses for both shallow and deep focus. Varying focal lengths is an excellent way to take a wide range of visually interesting pictures. Lenses for both close-ups (50 mm) and wide angle shots (300 mm) will come in handy.
In any gathering of children, there’s bound to be a great deal of movement. Setting the shutter speed to at least 1/125th of a second will prevent blur and keep your photos sharp. Additionally, if your camera has the option to shoot in continuous burst mode and take a number of shots with a single push of the shutter, this is an ideal way to shoot key moments, like the blowing out of birthday candles or a graduate walking across the stage. You won’t have to worry about missing the moment.
Speaking of special moments, it’s imperative to know the schedule for the event. Plan your must-have shots in advance, including posed shots with friends or family members. However, remember to take candid shots as well, capturing facial expressions that will tell their own stories. Be creative with shooting angles, and be sure to get plenty of pictures from a “kids’-eye” view.
You will doubtless get plenty of shots of the birthday child or graduate, but don’t forget the adults. Pay attention to the details, as well – the decorations, the food, or the clothes. In case things get messy, it can be fun to take before and after shots of the venue. Finally, it is important to respect boundaries when photographing children. It’s a good idea to get their parents’ permission, and it’s necessary to respect their personal space and feelings, even if it means losing a good shot. There are plenty more to be taken.
Of course, the best way to thoroughly document your child’s event in photographs is by hiring a professional photographer, and Photo Agency One can help you do just that!
